Used to have respect for La Roux. Whilst some of her music was, at times, a poor imitation of what Les Rhythmes Digitales was doing back when I was still at college, at least she spoke her mind and slated the commercial mainstream acts who got drawn into the celebrity DJing/doing guest spots on 'dance' mixes/released remixes with famous rappers featuring.

Now, in the last couple of months she's put out a mixtape with Major Lazer, done guest DJing slots including Bestival, and has now done this collab with 2nd Coming Of Hip Hop himself.

A few months back Nick Thayer released his debut album 'Just Let It Go' on Aquasky’s label Passenger

The album itself was nominated for 'Best Electronic / Dance Album' at the Australian Independent Record Awards. Around the time of the release, Nick made available the parts to the killer single 'Gonna Getcha' to anyone who wanted them. Some killer remixes came back, and Nick has even done a new VIP himself.

It would seem that T-Power (him of Shake Ur Body) has had something of an identiy crisis, and is now putting out breaks tunes under the name Mr Sofalumpkins. Ordinarily, this kind of behaviour would have you sectioned (or at least get you a Sunday afternoon set at Bestival), but it just so happens that the productions are pretty damn spot on.

t’s pretty obvious in most songs included in this mix (some songs not so obvious) that it was fully inspired by the infamous Roland TR-808 Drum Machine. After all, the one and only Sir Mix-A-Lot said it himself, “The 808 kick drum make the girlies get dumb” which should be reason enough. The 808 has without a doubt been the most popular and favorited drum machine in hip-hop and dance music since the beginning and it really just never gets old.

Clearly the 808 is being embraced even more in modern day electronic and dance music. Producers are getting quite creative with it’s sounds. They’re experimenting more, breaking the boundaries of the conventional kick, snare, hi hat patterns and loosely creating complex rhythms, showcasing other 808 percussion sounds like the clave for a hi hat or a tom replacing the kick and these new approaches are definitely represented throughout the mix.

This is using 2 x iPads, a VST version of Korg's electribe series and a basic mixer to demonstrate the ease of use of DJing in this way.

It's a nice idea and overall a really exciting video if you're geek minded. Good to see people using the iPad as a workable alternative to The Lemur, at a fraction of the price.

‘Hand Grenade’ is a rocket-fuelled adrenalin shot of blistering bass and earth-shattering drums, topped off with the hi-octane lyricism of Ivory, the super-sharp-shooter MC whose scattershot fusion of diverse influences is set to see him stride out of the South London underground to claim his rightful spot at the pinnacle of the indie rave scene.

This youthful, Brixton-born motor-mouth grew up on a diet of jungle, old skool rave, UK garage and punk, diverse forms which have been fused with surgical precision into a fresh and vibrant sound that fits 2010 like a velvet glove. ‘Hand Grenade’, the lead single from Ivory's forthcoming debut album, ‘Jack In The Box’, is street level sonic chicanery that recalls prime era Prodigy with added ghetto attitude.

Since it’s inception 3 years ago Studio Rockers has established itself as one of the heaviest and most innovative labels in the Dubstep scene today.

Their massive bass-led pumping electro-house, is a genre of its own. Un-phased by clubs or open air-festivals, whether playing live or Djing, they are quite simply a phenomenon in the making.

For 2 years, Felguk has been headlining majors parties in Brazil, always getting a warm and excited response of the crowd. Having toured USA, Canada and Mexico, the duo is ready to take the next step on the scene.

With a passion for rock, funk and pop and releases on Bug-Eyed Records and Plasmapool have placed Felguk firmly on the scene, being incorporated in the sets of notorious djs such as Spencer & Hill, Adam K, Klass, Miles Dyson, Tim Healey and Dj Dan.

Schwarzenegger's best films are dystopian images of the future

Well, they are. Total Recall, Running Man et al are better suited to the kind of role that Arnie was so good at, as the looser rules of science fact vs. science fiction are more open to be played with. Running Man's oppressive government control of the population and Total Recall's oppressive control of a whole planet allow for greater flexibility in terms of both plot devices, and avenues to be explored both physically within the film and as metaphors within them.

By contrast, films like Commando and Red Heat, both modern day action films, are lacking by their nature - the characters are limited to running, fighting and occasionally driving fast. But within the setting of The Now, the films lack both the scope of the dystopian, and also the opportunity to pursue more fanciful scenarios.

Some films, however, marry the two aspects perfectly. The Terminator series, which itself could be interpreted as some of his finest work, is a modern day dystopia, a foreboding snapshot of the future. The marriage of modern day elements with future happenings (the Terminator himself) allows a blurring of the lines between the standard car chases etc with phallic arm cannons and melting men.

Perhaps the most standout example of crossover work is Predator - in many people's opinions the best Schwarzenegger film. The modern day setting, blended with sci fi elements is both enrapturing and well played out.

However, it must be said, this could lend itself as much to the fact that the modern day setting is so far removed from an urban environment as to render it inert, and thus the modern day setting standpoint becomes null and void.

Overall, whilst a good balance of Arnie films appear in both the modern day and future dystopian settings, it is my opinion that dystopia wins hands down. Not least because the guns are a lot better.

[Interview] Kissy Sell Out

Kissy Sell Out has become a force to be reckoned with! Since his days as a designer learning his trade at Central Saint Martians art college, he’s now gone on to a staring role as one of BBC Radio One’s DJ line up championing new music and producers. A vital part of any self respecting electro lover’s line up, I sat down and asked the man a few questions...

You’ve just released your debut solo album – how did you find working on the project as a whole?

Exhausting haha! It'll be a while before I take another magical mystery tour like that again!

How difficult did you find it maintaining an element of cohesion running through it?

My debut album has a very strong theme running through it, as the title "Youth" suggests, so I found it quite easy to slip into my own little universe while writing the tracks as many of the tracks cover such personal subjects and fond memories.

How do you feel your production philosophy has changed since you first started?

I don't think my production methods have changed that much to be honest but I've become a lot more experienced in dealing with other people in the studio.

Are there major differences between your studio setup now and what you began learning on?

Haha, I like how you say learning! I've never really learnt how to do anything, I just sit down and try and make it sound like it does in my head! While working on my album I tried out many different types of equipment, mainly because I constantly had people telling me I do things the wrong way, but I still use the same stuff I always had these days. I guess the best thing about trying new studio setups for me is that you find out why you like your own so much!

What’s a basic rundown of your preferred tools nowadays?

Alas it is a secret still! Isn't not knowing how someone makes their music part of the magic?

You’re well known for your remix work – is the approach to remixing a track different from a fresh composition of your own?

Unfortunately writing your own song is a completely different beast from doing a remix. The best thing about a remix is that the original parts create musical boundaries for you to work around such as the key or the acapella whereas you have far more freedom when creating your own track which can be an overwhelming feeling.

Give us a production tip or trick for a new producer?

Make something unique to you - don't copy anyone!

What do you especially look for when selecting remix projects?

Tracks that sound like a good Christmas dinner with all the trimmings to play around with.

Have you ever turned down a chance to work with a well known artist, and if so why?

Many times haha! Mainly because of time constraints however - I'll never consider myself too cool to work with anyone really. I had to turn down remixing Hot Chip's big hit Ready For The Floor a few years ago which seems a bit crazy in retrospect but I got offered to remix The Human League the same week which was literally a childhood dream and the chance of a lifetime for me so I opted for The League.

How has your Radio1 show evolved during your tenure with the station?

I guess the biggest thing that has grown has been the community of listeners. I'm very proud to say that the listenership doubled within the first three months of the weekly show starting which was a huge confidence boost and made me work twice as hard on the weekly mixes.

I really enjoy making the Kissy Klub Versions specially for the show and keeping a constant dialogue running with the listeners via the texts and emails I get. Sometimes I have to let other presenters stand in for me because my live schedule gets too hectic and I literally walk around with a huge scrooge-like scowl on my face for about a day!

You’re well known for breaking new talent on the show – from a personal point of view, which artist are you most proud of being associated with in this way?

It's nice to be recognised for the effort I put in on that front - but it's really not hard to talk passionately about the new music I love - it often speaks for itself! Sadly, the top 40 chart is beginning to smell like old socks again as it gets dominated by mega-bucks press campaigns and auto-tune-heavy novelty electro songs but about half the records I play in my DJ sets are still unsigned tracks and remixes I find on myspace!

It seems criminal to me that the fresh ideas of so many talented young people get over-looked - if you want to hear something really fresh and exciting check out 16Bit, Art Vs Science or Jack Beats and you'll see what I mean.

Finally….is music powerful enough to change the world, and if so what one song would be most apt?

Once I'd finished pumping out 137bpm electro/speed garage bootlegs in the main room at Space in Ibiza last week the Ed Banger DJs continued to destroy years of dance music heritage by closing their set with the Beastie Boys - "You gotta fight, for your right to paaaarrrttttay!!" - hopefully that answers your question!

A short mix to get you through Friday featuring some of the tunes I've picked up this week.
